Front view. I’m guessing it is Johannes (John) who is standing next to the verandah post. (This was developed from a small glass-plate negative, therefore possibly dates back to when this major new extension to the house was just completed).
View from the main gate on Bunge Road.
View from the north east corner of the yard. The front part of the house with the tiled roof was a major extension, completed in 1907. The section adjoining this was the original home, built during the 1880s. The small building next to this was a kitchen, complete with maid’s room, built around 1900.
View from the north west corner of the yard.
Same again. You can just make out three ladies in this photo. I’m guessing this is (from left to right) Anne, Clara and Agnes.
A photo taken on Bunge Road looking west, also showing the main gate into Walden This is the exact location shown by the marker on the Google Earth map of Walden. The photo is the first of two photos in the collection which were obtained from large film negatives, which were in amongst the 5 x 7 inch glass plate negatives.
A cute photo. We are looking southwards here along the path which runs just east of the house.
A big fern house structure which you can just make out in an earlier photo.
Sheds and some of the horse yards.
The private (Lutheran) school at Walden which began operating in 1898, and continued for about ten years. It was located just west of the family home (a five minute walk). The first teacher was a Mr W Kuchel. The teaching was in both English and German. Clara, Hermann, Anne, Agnes and Walter began their education here. When it closed, they went to the nearby Sheep Hills State School. All that remains there to mark its existence is a road-side sign (shown in a photo in the Introduction).
The main dam at Walden, about 150 metres north west of the family home. A couple of photos presented later show men with horse teams constructing this dam. It was not often this full though.
