A Bunge family photo, plus two others. Back row: Hermann, Anne, Agnes, Clara. Middle row: Maria Bunge (mother of John), John, Anna, Edmund Thiele (brother of Anna). Front row: Walter, Max.
Same individuals as in previous photo, with one addition (name unknown).
Similar photo to the previous two, with a few extra individuals (and cockatoo). Different time and location though. The negative was of poorer quality.
A large Bunge family occasion. We think this was John and Anna’s 25th wedding anniversary celebration, on or near to October 3, 1913.
And we also think that this was the special cake, made for the occasion.
Another Bunge family occasion, details unknown (next two photos).
Another large Bunge family occasion, details unknown.
A Schultz-Habel wedding occasion.
A large Kelm family occasion.
The Kelm family.
Anna holding unknown child (in the front part of the Walden garden). It is just possible that this was John and Anna’s first grandchild, Adrienne (born April 2, 1917).
This, and the next three photos, are of Clara. She is standing in the hallway of the ‘new’ part of the Walden home. Behind the drapes is where the older part of the home is located. The first doorway on the left leads into an entertainment room, where there was once lavish furniture and a full-sized billiards table. There is still a large ornate fireplace and mantle piece there. Behind this doorway you can just make out another one. This is the hallway cupboard mentioned earlier (a linen cupboard), where the old camera and majority of the original glass plate negatives have been stored, undisturbed, for so many years.
The next three photos are of Hermann.
This a photo of Agnes. She contracted tuberculosis when she was 15 years old, but managed to recover. About nine years later though she was gored by a cow, and due to her weakened condition the tuberculosis re-emerged. She died when 24 years old in 1922.
Anne and Clara.
Clara.
Anne and Agnes.
Agnes, unknown and Anne.
The next six photos were developed from the smaller glass plate negatives, therefore date back up to four or five years before most of the other photos (i.e. to about 1907-1908). They show Clara, Anne and Agnes when they were about 17 y.o., 12 y.o. and 10 y.o. respectively.
Clara, Anne and Agnes. I’m sure it is Agnes who is holding the cockatoo in the very first set of photos of Walden itself.
Anne, next two photos.
Agnes.
Agnes (definitely), and (we think) Anne, then unknown. We also think it is Max (about two y.o.) in the foreground, holding the cat.
Agnes, unknown and (we think) Anne.
There were four photos of the Walden tennis group. This is the clearest and most presentable one. Back row: Unknown, Max Schultz, … Habel, Walter. Front row: Agnes, Anne, Max, Antonie Schultz, Wanda Schultz, Clara. This was the nucleus of the Walden Tennis Club which was to form later on. In 1919 tennis courts were constructed at Walden, and this new club was apparently a force to be reckoned with in the district. Agnes was the inaugural secretary of the club. In 1916 Max Schultz and Clara were married. Ruth Shaw, mentioned earlier, was their sixth child.
Note: From 1914 onwards there was a considerable amount of anti-German hostility whipped up in the district during the First World War. Max Schultz nevertheless tried to enlist in the A.I.F. but was refused due to his German name. Children from German families in the district were taunted at school during this time, being called such names as Fritz, Hermann and Hun.
